Ferret Foods and Diets: Your Ferret's Nutrition
Good ferretkeeping starts with good nutrition. Choose from these quality kibbled (dry) foods:
Ferrets have special dietary needs, so it's best to feed them a diet made specifically for them. A good ferret food will have a high content of meat/animal protein and healthful fats. It won't have a lot of corn.
Corn is basically an empty nutritional filler. It doesn't even provide a superior form of fiber. It's just something cheap that can be used to "fill up" your ferret. Your ferret's body isn't designed to process fillers like corn and, over the course of his lifetime, feeding a diet high in corn may compromise your ferret's health. But the better nutrition a ferret gets, the better prepared he is to fight off illness and to live a healthy, full life. Don't skimp on your ferret's food. If you're on a tight budget, you can cut costs in other areas, like treats, toys, or bedding. But make sure your ferret always has the best food you can afford to feed him.
You may also want to supplement your ferret's diet with real meat, like chicken, beef, fish, or pork. Cooked meats can be a very healthful treat for your ferret. Raw meats from reputable sources are also appropriate. The best types of meats are free-range or naturally fed (that is, grass-fed, not corn-fed).
